Gucci Joins The Right Side Of History, Bans Fur From All Future Collections

Animal lovers, rejoice – fashion house Gucci has joined the ranks of Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani and Tommy Hilfiger in banning fur from all its future collections.

The ban will come into effect from their Spring/Summer 2018 collection onwards, and was a team decision involving chief exec and president Marco Bizzarri and creative director Alessandro Michele.

“Do you think using furs today is still modern? I don’t think it’s still modern and that’s the reason why we decided not to do that. It’s a little bit out-dated,” Bizzarri told Business of Fashion“Creativity can jump in many different directions instead of using furs.”

It’s unlikely to have a financial impact on the hugely successful brand – while their cult fave Princetown loafers were made with kangaroo fur this past season, they’ll simply be replacing fur elements with faux fur, wool and other materials.

Gucci is now also signed up to the Fur-Free Alliance, which works to end exploitation and the killing of animals for fur.

The decision was very much based around what our generation wants when it comes to the brands we invest in.

“Fashion has always been about trends and emotions and anticipating the wishes and desires of consumers,”  said Bizzarri. “Fashion and modernity go together.”
