A whole extra batch of tickets to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child‘s massive Melbourne run go on sale later this month, if you have not already committed yourself to a seven-hour theatre sesh next year.
Seven hours all up, with a coupla hours off in the middle to get dinner, plus 20-minute intervals in each part. Now that’s a true test of your Harry Potter geekdom. It took less time than that to read the first few novels when we were helplessly devoted six-year-olds, lining up at Dymocks for our next hit.
The super acclaimed production – think nine Olivier Awards and six Tonys since it first opened in mid-2016 – has also extended its season: it was set to finish up on November 3, but they’re now going to be selling tickets up to December 1.
The Aussie interpretation – still with John Tiffany, named Best Director for both the London West End and Broadway productions, at the helm – kicked off rehearsals last month. The play stars Gareth Reeves, Gyton Grantley, Paula Arundell, Lucy Goleby and Tom Wren as the adult versions of your fave now-coupled-up HP characters.
The story follows adult Harry (Reeves), who now works for the Ministry of Magic, and is troubled by his past, as well as his son Albus (Sean Rees-Wemyss), who feels the pressure to live up to his father’s mighty teenage legacy.
Writer Jack Thorne cut his teeth on shows like Shameless and Skins, and has since gone on to adapt stories like Woyzeck and A Christmas Carol for London theatre mainstages (glorious productions, trust me). The story was conceived by Thorne with director Tiffany and of course the gal herself, J.K. Rowling.
Tickets for the exclusive Aussie run of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at Princess Theatre in Melbourne go on sale Tuesday November 27 HERE. You can watch each part of the play in one day or on consecutive evenings, or book each part separately for whenever suits.
