What To Know Before You Hit The ‘White Goods’ Sale Section On Boxing Day

You know how for ages, you’d see all these grown adults on the news lining up outside department stores on Boxing Day at a god-awful hour, like 5am, for reduced price fridges and washing machines? “They’re crazy,” you muttered to yourself while spooning cranberry sauce out of a jar in a no judgement post-Christmas food haze.

Except now you’re like 25+ and the idea of a reduced price washing machine actually gives you a sort of sexual shiver, doesn’t it. You’re hot for new fridges. Turned on at the thought of a tech-heavy microwave to replace the one you exploded mac and cheese in last month.

You want to be in line with those crazy mums and dads. But what should you go for? How do you know you’ve scored a deal? We hit up Gregory Maddison, Buying Manager at David Jones, for the hot tip.

YOU DO ACTUALLY NEED TO GET THERE AT THE CRACK OF DAWN

As crap as it is, you kinda do need to queue up if you want the stuff you want. If you don’t care about specific brands or types, you can maybe push it a bit later. But Gregory does say an early start is a must.

“We always recommend getting in as early as possible to have the best and first pick of the sale to ensure you don’t miss out on the products that are high priorities on your list,” he says. “People do start queuing from 3-4am at our key stores though so an early wake-up call is required if you really want to beat the crowd.”

GO IN WITH A PLAN

Know what you need/want, so you don’t get overwhelmed – better to rush straight over to the dishwashers and score a bargain than get distracted by two door fridges you can’t even get through the door of your teeny terrace.

“Expect great discounts across a range of fridges/freezers, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers,” says Gregory.

Basically – everything’s gonna be on sale (pretty much) so go in with an idea of what you need so you don’t get sidelined.

WHEN IN DOUBT, ASK

This isn’t the time to whip out your phone and start Googling – there’s too much going on for that. Instead, utilise in-store experts to help you out with finicky stuff like star ratings and what suits your lifestyle.

“Speak to a specialist in store – they can explain the jargon on the labels on a great range of energy saving appliances,” says Gregory. “This can really help decipher what the energy consumption is like to keep those bills down.”

HAVE YOUR SPECS ON HAND

Do not – dooooo not – arrive without having measured your kitchen or laundry space. You’ll run the risk of picking up an appliance that juuust doesn’t fit – and a lot of clearance items don’t have returns options behind ’em.

“Definitely don’t go into store without measuring the space that your appliance is going into, “ stresses Gregory. “The last thing you want is a great deal on a fridge that doesn’t fit in your kitchen when it’s delivered.”

While you’re at it – take a pic of the space for good measure. You might wanna compare wall colours to the item, for example.

HAVE SPECS FOR EVERYTHING, ACTUALLY

Since you’re hitting the clearance sales so early, you may as well take down the specs for other stuff in your house you kinda need to replace – like lounges, beds, and mattresses. Sure, you may not pick up a new one – but you’d end up kicking yourself if, say, mattresses were 60% off and you didn’t know the size of your bed frame.

“The David Jones’ Clearance sale offers savings on current season stock across every category including fashion, shoes, accessories, homewares, manchester, beds and more,” explains Gregory.

Basically – there’s a lot of sale stuff to pick up and you’re now in the store hours before the mad rush – so having a squiz at the other sections is worth it, IMO.
