ABOUT THE WHEELER CENTRE
The Wheeler Centre exists to drive the development and celebration of literature in Melbourne and beyond and to foster broad public engagement in books, writing and ideas.

The Wheeler Centre is nationally and internationally renowned as a leading institution for the art of conversation, and champion of the transformative power of informed public discussion and debate.  An autonomous cultural organisation housed in the State Library of Victoria, the Centre programs over 200 public events each year, in its 250-seat performance space and in venues across Melbourne and regional Victoria.

The centerpiece of Melbourne’s UNESCO City of Literature designation, the Wheeler Centre is a physical hub and home for writers and literary organisations:

·         Australian Poetry

·         Emerging Writers’ Festival

·         Express Media

·         Melbourne City of Literature Office

·         Melbourne Writers Festival

·         Small Press Network

·         Writers Victoria

The ambitious and comprehensive combination of literary community, creative development, and audience engagement created by this hub cannot be found anywhere else, nationally or internationally.

ABOUT THIS ROLE
The Venue Coordinator is pivotal to the smooth operations of the Wheeler Centre as both a cultural organisation and a physical hub for the broader literary sector. The position acts as receptionist and first point of contact for a wide variety of stakeholders including the general public, the resident organisations’ staff and visitors, and Wheeler Centre audiences. Alongside this, the Venue Coordinator oversees venue hires within the Centre – building relationships with a broad range of organisations within the books, writing and publishing sector – and ensures the optimal maintenance of the building’s spaces through regular liaison with State Library Victoria, who provide all maintenance and property services.

The Wheeler Centre is a fast-paced and ambitious organisation. To succeed in this position, you will enjoy working in a highly-motivated and collaborative work place, with involvement in a broad range of activities. This is a hands-on delivery role which requires you to demonstrate exemplary customer service and communications skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

The role is offered as a part-time job sharing with another Venue Coordinator. We are looking for applicants who can commit to at least 3-days per week until the end of 2017, with the possibility to increase to 4-days per week in 2018. Please note your availability and preference for 3 or 4 days per week in your cover letter.

KEY RELATIONSHIPS
The Venue Coordinator:

  • Reports to the General Manager and works as part of the Operations team.
  • Maintain keys relationships with all resident literary organisations within the Wheeler Centre.
  • Liaises with SLV People & Property Dept regarding matters impacting the smooth operations of the building (e.g., equipment, cleaning, minor repairs) and safe delivery of hire events (access, security).
