Communications/Journalism Internship at One Mandate Group

As a three-month, unpaid position, working two days a week with the managing editor, the internship will give you hands-on experience in publishing and journalism, with an ideal portfolio on completion of 30-40 bylined articles.

You will be mentored directly by the managing editor, who will help you grow as a writer and journalist. We will give you the training and guidance needed for you to work independently, and the confidence to be able to back your editorial decisions. You will get a curriculum with key competencies with your progress encouraged, and tracked along the way.

While it is aimed at journalism/communications students, previous interns have come from finance, law, and other sectors, as a means to develop their writing skills.

The Company:

One Mandate Group is a small specialist publishing company with over 30 years’ experience encompassing books, magazines, television and multimedia publishing.

We are a small and friendly team working in Roseville on Sydney’s North Shore, and are looking for a fledgling digital media star to join our team as an intern.

The Role:

You will assist with all facets of the publishing process in a small business – research, writing, editing, interviewing, marketing and social media. This is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience and real practice as a journalist, meeting deadlines and filing stories.

We are in the process of launching a global title on innovation, with a focus on Australia: this means the subject matter is diverse, interesting, and you will get to speak to people on the cutting edge of science and technology. We also have an established online title on agriculture, a subject area which is highly valued by news organisations with a national audience.

What’s involved:

  • Research, write and edit content for publication.
  • Pitch stories
  • Write clean copy, quickly, to deadlines
  • Interview industry figures and leaders on a wide variety of subjects.
  • Manage a variety of social media outlets, source photos and create content for our website.
  • Research information in support of both the editorial and sales teams.

The role starts in August, with total flexibility as to your schedule. There is the strong possibility of an offer of paid work following the internship period, however this cannot be guaranteed. Attendance at our office – a 5 min walk from Roseville train station – is necessary.

Skills Required:

  • A third year (or later) uni student studying Journalism, Media and Communications or Marketing would be ideally suited to the role
  • Curious nature.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of social media.
  • Your own laptop is required.
  • Understanding of/background in agriculture/science/technology is not required, but would be a bonus.

To apply, please email [email protected] with a resume and short (no longer than 1 page) cover sheet detailing your suitability for the role. Past examples of writing are also encouraged, either as links, or separate documents.
