Scientists Go Full Willy Wonka, Mastermind Spoon That Makes Veggies Tastier

A wise man once said, “you don’t win friends with salad.”

His name was Homer J Simpson.
Of course, Homie is the same man who drinks Duff erryday and once got so dang fat he had to wear a friggen Muumuu.
Fictional characters aside, getting veggies up ya daily is crucial in staying healthy and living a long life.
While we all know this, it doesn’t make brussel sprouts taste any less like arse.
Luckily, UK scientists have developed a device which makes low-sugar food taste a helluva lot sweeter.
Led by Professor Adrian Cheok, the University of London have created the Taste Buddy – a microchip of sorts that emits a low-level electrical current that cheekily stimulates taste buds and tricks ’em into tasting sweet or salt flavours that aren’t really there.
The invention was unveiled at The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Fair in Birmingham, and experts reckon the little chip could be engineered to fit within cutlery, cups and cans. The spoon prototype is already in development.
“Many children hate the taste of vegetables. I wanted to make a device that could allow children to eat vegetables that taste like chocolate,” said Dr Cheok.
It could also work for vegetarians who miss eating meat, changing the taste of tofu to steak. In simple terms, it works by exploiting the chemical reactions that occur in the mouth when we eat.
Dr Cheok started his Willy Wonka-esque engineering experiment for fun, but now sees it as a tool for positive social impact.
“The Taste Buddy could eventually help save lives, by allowing people to switch to healthier food choices.”
