Glorious memery aside, there’s always been debate around whether or not using lip balm regularly is actually good for your lips.
Heck, a quick Google search proves that we’re collectively concerned about this seemingly genuine addiction:
What they say is, you start using lip product to cure dryness. But the more you do it, the more your lips rely on the stuff, creating a sickly sweet circle-jerk.
But for once and for all, we have answers. If you’re a big lip balm-er, you’re gonna like ’em.
Insider in the US spoke to dermatologist Melanie Grossman, who firmly believes chapstick addiction is a myth.
“Sometimes people come in and they say to me, ‘You know what? I keep using lip moisturizer and my skin feels dryer. I’m getting cracks around my mouth.’ And they say, ‘I keep using it. I’m using it constantly and I feel like I’m addicted to it,'” she told Business Insider.“And I say, ‘You know what? That may mean you’re allergic.'”
She does on to explain that you might actually be experiencing contact dermatitis. It’s the scientific name for what happens when something touches your skin and causes a nasty rash. It’s often caused by ingredients in cosmetics and it’s common as hell.
“It’s not that your lips need more and more. You might have a sensitivity to the ingredients in the product, which is making your lips feel more irritated,” Grossman said.“So that it might be just that you need to change the product.”
But if that still fails and you wanna get to the root of the problem – book in with a dermatologist and you might save money on the Baume de Rose in future.
