Oh Good, That ‘No Socks’ Trend Is Causing A Huge Foot Fungus Outbreak

And for today’s revolting body-related news, apparently we’re all forgoing socks so hard this year we’ve caused a foot fungus outbreak. COOL.

The info is coming from the UK, where the College Of Podiatry have found that a rise in fungal infections is occurring among the 18-25 set – dudes in particular. They’re attributing it in part to the fact that we’re all wearing our shoes without socks these days.

Obviously, going sockless isn’t super new – but the rise of the loafer with a lil’ sexy ankle showing is probably to blame here. Case in point: this guy.

“The average feet sweat about half a pint a day,” podiatrist Emma Stephenson told the BBC. “Too much moisture and warmth can lead to fungal infections such as athlete’s foot.”

Oh, it gets worse. Cop this story.

“One of the worst incidents I’ve seen is a 19 year-old man who worked in a car wash,” Emma continues. “He had very sweaty feet and trench foot.”

TRENCH FOOT. TRENCH. FOOT. For anyone who can’t remember back to their HSC, that’s what the soldiers in World War I developed.

If you’re still hell-bent on repping your loafers (or sneakers, or Vans) sans socks, Emma suggests spraying the soles of your feet with anti-perspirant. Alternatively, get one of those deodorising foot powders, which help soak up (gross) sweat.

Or, y’know – wear socks ya grot.
