Revealed via a short trailer, Streets of Rage 4 swaps the pixelated graphics of yesteryear with beautifully hand-drawn art which still feels true to the series. It will feature an all-new story, tons of new stages, and even new gameplay mechanics.
The title is being developed by a company called Lizardcube, who are well-known their remake of Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, which also featured heavy use of hand-drawn art.
The series (known as Bare Knuckle in Japan) first appeared on the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis in 1991 and was essentially a side-scrolling brawler where you beat the shit out of enemies in the streets. It was well-received by critics and fans alike.
You can check out the trailer for the upcoming title below.
There’s no word on a release date for this one just yet, nor do we know which platforms it’ll be on, so you’ll just have to keep an eye out for more news as it surfaces. Until then, you can play most of the series as it currently exists on most platforms, including Xbox One and Nintendo 3DS.
