Sony Offers An Update On PlayStation Cross-Play But Don’t Get Your Hopes Up

If you’re any kind of gamer, you’ll likely be aware of the recent Sony cross-play drama everyone’s getting all het up about. After outcry from the PlayStation community, the company has addressed the issue in a conversation with Eurogamer.

If you’re not up to date on the situation, allow me to fill you in. A heap of games now allow something called cross-play, which means anyone who owns one of those games can play with other users regardless of the platform they’re playing on. For example, those playing on Nintendo Switch can now play Minecraft with people playing on Xbox One.

Sony has been reluctant to introduce cross-play to the PlayStation platform, leaving its users to play amongst themselves while everyone else plays together. Furthermore, those with a PS4 Fortnite account are not able to access it via other platforms, something those other platforms already allow. While it looks like we’re still a little while off any kind of solution, Sony executive Shawn Layden wants you to know its on the company’s radar.

“We’re hearing it. We’re looking at a lot of the possibilities,” Layden told Eurogamer. “You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I’m confident we’ll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business.”

Sony Online Entertainment head John Smedley recently said the reason they don’t wanna do it is “money”, but – and I’ve said this before – the majority of PS4 users are surely purchasing the console for its exclusives, most of which are single-player experiences. I can’t see cross-play affecting its sales all the much, but hey, I’m not privy to the same information Sony is.

Other platforms have really embraced the idea, the most recent example being Nintendo’s latest advertisement for Minecraft in which cross-play is massively championed.

Will PS4 gamers every get the chance to play with everyone else? Maybe, but we’ll just have to wait and see how Sony plan on tackling the issue.
