Rockstar Games announced the online multiplayer component of Red Dead Redemption 2 today, simply titled, Red Dead Online. Much like the popular GTA Online, multiplayer will take place in the game’s massive open world, allowing players to fuck around however they want, or take part in more structured multiplayer scenarios.

“Red Dead Online is an evolution of the classic multiplayer experience in the original Red Dead Redemption, blending narrative with competitive and cooperative gameplay in fun new ways,” Rockstar wrote in a blog post. “Using the gameplay of the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2 as a foundation, Red Dead Online will be ready to be explored alone or with friends, and will also feature constant updates and adjustments to grow and evolve this experience for all players.”
While Red Dead Online won’t officially launch until after the single player experience launches in October, a public beta will be available to play in November for those who are extra keen on giving it a whirl. You’ll be able to access it for free with any copy of RDR2 on Xbox One or PlayStation 4. Rockstar does stress, however, that there will “inevitably be some turbulence at launch,” so just be wary of that.
RDR2 is set for release on October 26 and from what we’ve seen so far, it’s going to be an absolutely mammoth game. I’d wager you’ll have a lot to keep you occupied before you even think about jumping online, which gives the team plenty of time to iron out any wrinkles.
“We believe this way of rolling out will give people the best overall experiences with both single player and multiplayer,” Rockstar director of design, Imran Sarwar, told IGN in an interview.
