PlayStation Is Skipping E3 For The First Time In 24 Years In 2019

playstation 5 release date

PlayStation will not be appearing at E3 2019, making it the first time in 24 years the company is ditching one of the biggest gaming conventions in the world. In a report by Game Informer, Sony said it’ll instead be “exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019.”

“As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community,” the company said. “PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you.”

Sony also confirmed that they won’t be doing anything around E3 as many competitors often do. No presence whatsoever. Given the company has already confirmed it’s working on the PlayStation 5, I’d say this is a pretty good indication that it won’t be hitting shelves next year. If I were to put money on it, I’d wager the team will aim for a late 2020 release for its new hardware.

Senior vice president of communications, Jennifer Clark, says PlayStation will be “looking at events as a whole and how we can speak more to our fans and continue to wow them.”

“The timing of PSX and E3 didn’t allow for that, but lots of exciting things to come, and we hope to share shortly. Some of our biggest games will have key milestones next year so we will work hard to blow those up.”

Given we’re in what’s likely the final 12 months of current gen hardware, or thereabouts, I’d say the Sony will be saving its cash to market its upcoming lineup of first-party games like The Last of Us Part II and Death Stranding, which folks already know all about.

E3 is held yearly in LA around June and has been running since 1995, becoming the place where publishers and console makers often unveil their new hardware and upcoming titles for the year.

In other words, expect to hear plenty from PlayStation next year, just not at E3.
