Players Are Already Sniping Pilots From Helicopters In ‘COD’ Battle Royale

A beta for the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 battle royale mode, Blackout, began recently, resulting in a wealth of footage and details eager fans have been hungry for. The biggest question everyone still has, of course, is will it trump the genre veterans, PUBG and Fortnite? Well, it’s definitely got the upper hand on at least one of them.

To me, this looks like the game PUBG fans have wanted all along. The mechanics are more or less the same, but it’s far more polished than the genre original, both in terms of gunplay and just general bugginess. That’s not to say it’s perfect – nor will I be able to confirm until I give it a whirl myself – but if the general consensus is anything to go by so far, it’s going to be absolutely insane.

Instead of a plane, you jump into the game via a group of helicopters and instead of just freefalling, you have a wingsuit which allows you to travel huge distances. From there it looks like business as usual; find some loot and survive the continually shrinking circles to hopefully become the last person or squad standing.

While my original guess was that the inclusion of zombies is the reason for the shrinking play area, that doesn’t seem to be the case at all. In fact, the circle seems to be identical to PUBG’s blue field of electricity or whatever the hell it is. Still, there are definitely zombies getting around in the world, so I guess they’re just there for shits and giggles.

There’s also a bunch of interesting gadgets, weaponry and vehicles included in Blackout. You can zip around the map using a grappling hook, or even fly around in a helicopter, but don’t expect it to be much protection, because folks are already landing insane shots on the drivers.

If you’re wondering what the grappling hook is like, it makes an appearance in the clip below.

Not enough gadgetry for you? Well, how about a fucking ray gun?

But my favourite part of all this footage is being able to kill people with a basketball, which instantly makes it better than PUBG and Fortnite combined, at least to me.

Goddamn, that is some good gear. You can check out some more gameplay clips below.

And if you want a more holistic view of what a normal game is like, you can watch two hours worth below.

It’s probably too soon to tell if Blackout will be the one to dethrone Fortnite from the top spot, but man, it could get close. The thing is, Fortnite has had plenty of time to become a total cultural phenomenon, on top of an extremely popular game. Sure, the COD series has tenure, but that probably isn’t enough.

Either way, I can’t wait to get my hands on this.
