Nintendo’s Reportedly Releasing A Souped-Up Version Of The Switch Next Year

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal Japan, Nintendo is gearing up to release a new version of its Switch console next year, citing suppliers and “others with direct knowledge of the plan” as its sources.

While not a helluva lot is known about the new console, these sources told the publication that Nintendo is having discussions about new hardware and software features, so I’d say we’ll be looking at the Xbox One X or PS4 Pro version of the Switch. In other words, it’ll be a slightly improved version of the device as we currently know it.

The company is also reportedly considering the costs of implementing these upgrades and even mentioned a change to the current unit’s “low-end” display, which could mean an update to a 1080p output in handheld mode. The current output is 720p when not docked.

The sources say this updated console could be available to consumers as soon as our winter, 2019, but certainly during the second half of next year.

It’s hoped that by giving users the option to upgrade to a better experience, the momentum in Nintendo console sales will continue. According to its last report, the company has sold almost 20 million Switches.

Of course, these reports are far from confirmed, so we’ll still have to wait and see whether this becomes more than a leaked conversation from Nintendo HQ.
