Nintendo Will Hold Your Cloud Saves For 6 Months If Your Subscription Lapses

If you were feeling a little nervous about what happens to your cloud save files if your subscription to Nintendo‘s new online service expires, don’t worry, they’ll hold onto them for you, but not forever.

Speaking with Variety, a Nintendo spokesperson said the company will make sure your saves are safe as long as you renew your membership within six months of it ending. It will “allow users who resubscribe within 180 days to access their previous Save Data Cloud backups,” the representative said.

Beyond six months, it’s not exactly clear what will happen to any save files left in limbo, but it doesn’t look like Nintendo will explicitly delete them, they just can’t guarantee they’ll be held for an “extended period of time,” its official FAQ reads. In other words, if you wanna hold onto your shit, six months should be plenty of time to sort out a renewal.

Nintendo Switch Online offers a number of services to users, including cloud saves, online play, social functions, a library of NES titles, and more. Membership will set you back $5.95 for a single month, $11.95 for three months, and $29.95 for the whole 12 months.

While fans are happy cloud saves are offered in the new service, many are still hoping the company will implement local backup functionality, which would not only allow them to make copies for safe keeping but also transfer them to other Switches.
