Nintendo Has Patented A Phone Case That’s Also A Playable Game Boy

Nintendo has filed a patent for a phone case that would also allow users to play classic Game Boy games because nostalgia knows no bounds, folks.

Spotted by Siliconera, the patent (filed in March of this year) details a phone cover that encloses the smartphone like one of those leather flip cases your mum has, only a section of the front is left open where the Game Boy screen is, and the buttons would allow you to enter inputs via the phone’s touchscreen.

“One of the key features of this Game Boy casing is the ability for inputs on the buttons on the casing to be sensed by the touchscreen beneath the buttons,” the article reads.

You can check out some images of the filing below, which makes the whole thing a little easier to understand.

In other words, the case is simply a controller for your phone’s own screen, which would assumedly run Game Boy games on an emulator app of some description. It would do this with a “conductive sheet within the cover that enables the touchscreen to sense the input when the nub on the bottom side touches the touchscreen, in the same way human fingers are sensed.”

It’s important to note that just because Nintendo filed the patent doesn’t mean they’re working on the product. It certainly would be a cool way to play old games on the go, but what would be cooler is if they just released them on the damn Switch already.
