The Creator Of ‘Rick & Morty’ Is Making A Game & It Looks Certifiably Insane

If you remember back to this year’s E3, you might recall PlayStation‘s announcement for a weird game called Trover Saves the Universe, which just so happens to made by Rick & Morty co-creator, Justin Roiland. On release, it will be playable as both a normal game, as well as a PSVR title.

As you can imagine, the vibes are extremely similar to those in the popular cartoon, down to Roiland’s signature rambling voices, one of which sounds exactly like Morty. While actual gameplay footage was scarce during the announcement, a new trailer from PAX West today is a little more revealing.

As far as I can tell, it looks like it’s going to be a mix of platforming and, uh, something else which involves a PlayStation controller within the actual game. It’s also unclear how different the gameplay will be between the standard and VR  versions, so we might have to wait and see what happens there.

The big draw for Trover is obviously the comedic aspect rather than the gameplay itself, kinda like how the comedy of the latest South Park games is the main motivation for progress, at least that’s what it was for me. You can check out the latest trailer below.

Don’t get your hopes up for any Rick & Morty cameos, though, because Roiland told IGN it’s not happening during an interview at PAX West. But while the game is its own entity, he also admits that its events could take place in the Rick & Morty universe, simply because of how the show works.

“We’ve seen Rick & Morty find themselves on a planet [with] chairs that are the sentient dominant species… Which is f**king crazy,” he told IGN. “So, I mean, to that level of absurdity and [with] infinite realities, it’s completely feasible that all of this stuff could be happening in the same universe. But there hasn’t been any thought about, like, direct crossover or any of that kind of stuff.”

The PS4 exclusive is due out at some point in 2019.
