The Creators Of ‘Duke Nukem 3D’ Have A New Game Made W/ The Same Engine

The Duke Nukem franchise has gone through many iterations over its lifespan, from side-scrolling action to modern 3D first-person shooter. But there was one era that really cemented the series as one of the most memorable.

You probably already know which one I’m talking about – the 1996 belter, Duke Nukem 3D – and now its 22-year-old engine is being used to power a brand new game that looks like it could have come from the same universe.

It’s called Ion Maiden, a name which rules in itself, and it packs all of the old school animations, pixelated graphics, and over the top action of other Build Engine games, like the aforementioned Duke Nukem 3D and 1997’s Shadow Warrior.

Published by the very same folks who put out the Nukem title – 3D Realms – Ion Maiden is billed as a sequel to the 2015 top-down shooter, Bombshell. While it certainly looks old as hell, there’s plenty of modern elements in the mix to ensure it doesn’t feel stale.

“Just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean there won’t be all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought,” the team wrote in a news release. In other words, expect modern gaming luxuries like auto saves, widescreen and controller support, and headshots.

Taking on the cybernetic army of Dr. Jadus Heskel, you play as carryover hero, Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison, running-and-gunning your way through the game with no regenerating health or cover, so you can probably expect to die a lot.

Ion Maiden is out on Steam‘s Early Access platform right now, promising a “multi-hour preview campaign” ahead of its full release in the third quarter of 2018. Along with PC, it’ll also be hitting the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Do yourself a favour and suss out the trailer below. It looks insanely fun.
