The nostalgia that comes with playing old games is pretty damn powerful. The older the game is to you, the stronger your reaction will be. It’s like video game crack.
But this bad boy will fuck you up in a whole new way. Game modders Trenavix, Waschpenner and Shyguyhex have combined the worlds of Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie 64 to create Super Banjo-Kazooie 64 – a nostalgic fever dream that’s simultaneously amazing and weirdly jarring.
The team – who have worked on similar game-tweaking projects in the past – used a program called SM64Paint to merge the world of Banjo-Kazooie with the mechanics and gameplay of SM64. In other words, Mario gets to run around and collect Jiggy puzzle pieces in lieu of stars. Check it out below.
The music you hear and the world old mate is fanging around in is from Banjo-Kazooie, while the enemy Goombas and and Shy Guys usually reside in Mario’s domain. It’s only a demo at this stage, but the creators have hinted at an expansion if the mod garners enough interest.
It’s pretty strange watching two childhood memories merge into one extremely weird one, but if you had no knowledge of either game, you’d be forgiven for thinking nothing was amiss. They seem to fit together almost too well.
If you wanna give it a go for yourself, you can grab it right here.
