‘Fortnite’ Raked In $162 Million In Revenue Last Month, Overtaking ‘PUBG’

If you told me Fortnite would be bigger than PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds 6 months ago, I probably would have laughed in your face. But here we are in March and Fortnite just keeps powering ahead in every aspect.

Now the game has surpassed the monthly revenue of PUBG for the first time, pulling in a whopping $US126 millions ($162 million) in February according to Superdata Research.

While both games have a similar Battle Royale premise – 100 players jump into a map with a decreasing play area until there’s only one left standing – the way they make money is fairly different. For starters, Fortnite doesn’t cost anything to play, but allows folks to spend real money on upgrades that are, for the most part, purely cosmetic.

PUBG costs $US30 ($38) from the get-go, and while it offers similar cosmetic upgrades for cash money, the idea hasn’t been implemented as aggressively as it has been in Fortnite.

In other words, PUBG relies mostly on one-off game purchases, while Fortnite receives ongoing revenue through in-game purchases.

Fortnite is also available on more platforms. In fact, it’s on just about everything besides the Nintendo Switch, and there’s even rumours that that’s coming, too. Given its aggressive approach compared to PUBG’s, it’s easy to see why they’ve been seeing such meteoric success.

“Fortnite also has an easier learning curve and is more kid friendly thanks to its cartoonish looks,” the Superdata Research blog reads. “These factors have combined to make Fortnite a bona fide social phenomenon, inspiring high school exams and finding its way into sports celebrations.”

But hey, spare a thought for poor old PUBG, who has had a rampant cheating problem for some time now. Because developer, PUBG Corp has been spending so much time battling this issue, work on polishing the game and adding new content has slowed to a painful pace. Folks have grown tired of waiting, with many jumping on to the competitor’s offering.

But like I said previously, both games are great and can exist on their own merits. They each seem to scratch a unique itch within the same genre, one just feels a little nicer than the other at the moment.
