That’s right, an actual Final Fantasy XIV float will come alive at this year’s Mardi Gras, becoming the first-ever video game to enter a float in the parade.

Final Fantasy is teaming up with Sydney Gaymers on the float. Are we expecting a bunch of Chocobos? Yes, yes we are.

“Sydney Gaymers is thrilled to be collaborating with Final Fantasy XIV Online for its 2019 float entry,” Sydney Gaymers’ Peak Distapan said in a statement. “It means so much to receive direct support, validation and acknowledgement from such a force in the industry.”

For many LGBTQI+ people, online communities provide a space for the journey and exploration of personal identities They allow us to connect, and celebrate, and they reinforce that we are not alone.

FFXIV director Naoki Yoshida added that he was “very happy” with the collaboration.

“To see it makes me very happy indeed, both as the person in charge of FFXIV and also as just another player of the game,” he said.

Mardi Gras kicks off today, 15 February, and will continue until the 3 March.

You’ll be able to see the Final Fantasy float when the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade takes over the city on Saturday 2 March.

The theme of this year’s event is FEARLESS to celebrate and acknowledge all the LGBTQI+ people across the world who express themselves every day.

Just to name a couple of events on this year’s line-up, you have the incredible Sissy Ball, presented by Red Bull Music, which will take over Carriage Works on Saturday 23 February. There’s also the interactive cabaret banquet Cake Daddy, the powerful Butch Monologues, and The Moors – described as a “kinky homage to the Brontës” that explores female power and individuality.

Not to mention the lush AF Strictly Kaftan Party. This baby – a pool party – will be hosted at the Ivy Pool Club on Tuesday 19 February and as you may guess from the name, it’s got a Kaftan theme.
