Remember That Open World ‘Star Wars’ Game EA Was Working On? It’s Cancelled

Electronic Arts, the company behind the FIFA and Battlefield franchises, has been working on an open world Star Wars game for a little while now, but not anymore. According to a report by Kotaku, it’s been cancelled.

The game was originally in development with Visceral, a studio best known for the Dead Space series, but EA shut it down in October of 2017 and handed the project over to EA’s Vancouver office, which decided to rework the whole thing. Three sources close to the company have told Kotaku that the untitled Star Wars game is no longer in development.

Visceral’s take on the project – codenamed Ragtag at the time – was a linear, Uncharted-esque adventure game which was set to be directed by Amy Hennig. When EA Vancouver took the reigns, they reworked it into an open world game, keeping only a few assets but for the most part, rebooting the entire thing. As Kotaku points out, EA mentioned its plans when the announcement to close Visceral was made.

“It has become clear that to deliver an experience that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come, we needed to pivot the design,” the company said in a blog post.

EA Vancouver’s next game is rumoured to be another Star Wars game, but that’s far from confirmed. Perhaps third time’s a charm?
