When I first heard Blizzard‘s classic action RPG, Diablo 3, was coming to the Nintendo Switch, I felt a weird mix of excitement and apprehension. The only experience I’d had with the series prior to this point was Diablo 2 on the PC, and how they’d mirror the experience on a console seemed weird to me, but I was keen to give it a whirl regardless.

Yes, I know, Diablo 3 hit a bunch of consoles before it came to the Switch, but I had fallen away from the series and just completely missed it. Not for any particular reason, I just never got around to playing the latest in the franchise, but if I did, it would have been on the PC because that’s where I do most of my gaming.
I’ve been spinning the game on my Switch for about a week and to be honest, I’m absolutely loving it. Not only does everything from combat to looting feel natural in the absence of a keyboard and mouse (something I found hard to reconcile for some weird reason), it runs like a bloody dream on the portable console. Having never played Diablo 3, I feel like I’m getting the best possible version and in turn, the best way to experience it for the first time.
Of course, the biggest advantage of the Switch is its portability, which, in the case, translates to enjoying a full-blown Diablo experience on the go, and it feels freaking fantastic. On that note, it’s also the only way I’ve been able to find time to play it in the shadow of Red Dead Redemption 2 and the time it’s sucking from my life, so I’m pretty thankful that I can play both at the same time – one on my commute and one at home.
I’m still on the first act, so I can’t really give you any of my thoughts on the story itself yet, but what I’ve played so far has been a damn good time. For an 8-year-old game, it looks great, the voice acting is solid, and the soundtrack is giving me some wild flashbacks.
I didn’t think the Switch version of Diablo 3 was going to be terrible, I just wasn’t expecting it to be this good. If you’re looking for something to kill time until Super Smash Bros. Ultimate hits the console in December, I highly recommend grabbing this. As an added bonus, you’ll be able to get around wearing Ganondorf‘s armour from the Zelda series. What’s not to love?
