‘Blood & Truth’ Is Like The Beautiful Child Of ‘Time Crisis’ & ‘Max Payne’

If you were a fan of the old Time Crisis games, landing Max Payne-style headshots in slow motion, or just generally feeling like John Wick, then you’ll wanna consider picking up PlayStation‘s VR action thriller, Blood & Truth.

Exclusive to PSVR, the first-person shooter puts you in the shoes of Ryan Marks, an ex-special forces soldier caught up in a fight against a crime boss looking to move in his family’s turf. Obviously, Ryan (you) isn’t having any of it, so it’s up to you to take down waves of henchmen with a variety of weapons.

Blood & Truth lends itself to VR gameplay incredibly well. Apart from being a very polished experience, it also feels a lot like the next generation of Time Crisis-esque arcade shooters mixed with some of the most outrageous action scenes you could ask for, which are only amplified in a VR setting.

Rather than moving around via teleportation or control stick as some VR games require, Blood & Truth simply asks that you look in the direction you want to move and press a button. This moves you from cover to cover, allowing you to continue raining bullets on your enemies in transit, which kicks ass and feels great. Like Time Crisis, enemies will pop out and move around, so you’ll need to think and shoot fast to take them out before moving onto the next area.

Like the classic Max Payne series, you can slow down time throughout Blood & Truth, which is particularly handy in situations where it’s easy to get overwhelmed by enemies. It also makes you feel a lot like John Wick, especially when you’re spinning guns around your fingers for flair or chucking clips into the air to catch in your gun. I’m not joking, these are things you can actually do and it makes you feel like a gun-fu lord.

Weapons more or less appear at certain points throughout levels, either sitting out in the open or inside crates. You can carry two primaries and two sidearms at a time, so there’s always plenty of ways to take on a certain situation. You can also dual wield weapons, whether it’s two sidearms, a primary and a sidearm, or two primaries, there’s a lot of flexibility to tailor your loadout to your playstyle.

Besides jumping from cover to cover, there are a number of on-rails action sequences where movement takes place automatically, tasking you with simply taking out bad guys, grabbing hold of a ledge, or some other action nonsense. For example, it could be chasing someone down on foot, being in the passenger seat of a car during a car chase, or jumping out of a dang window, but they all manage to be a thrilling experience. There were definitely more than a few times I actually shouted “oh FUCK” during these moments.

You can have a look at some gameplay footage for yourself below.

The gameplay in Blood & Truth is often broken up with small puzzle or climbing sections, like picking locks, fiddling with electrical circuits, or climbing up walls, the latter of which you do by using your hands to make actual climbing motions. They’re not enormous parts of the game by any means, but they provide a little bit of variety that goes a long way in ensuring the main gameplay doesn’t grow stale.

Depending on how you are with VR, some of the movement in Blood & Truth can make you feel a little queasy. For me, it’s any time I’m climbing monkey bars that curve around corners, but switching on the VR comfort mode, which blurs your peripherals when moving, definitely helps ease this.

All in all, Blood & Truth is a fantastic VR game. It has a great story to tell, snappy, responsive gunplay, and doesn’t feel bogged down by the movement hurdles so many similar titles struggle with. If you’ve been looking for a reason to pick up a PSVR headset, this is it.
