One of the earliest copies of the very first Super Mario Bros. game has just sold on eBay for a staggering amount of money. $37,784 ($30,100.44 US), to be precise.
Before you go running to your parents’ house to dig out all of your old NES games, there was a reason this particular copy scored such a high price and why yours is worth sweet fuck all.
For starters, it’s in damn fine condition and still sealed in the original plastic wrapping. Look at that bad boy. Muy bueno.
Looking past the obvious condition of the packaging, this is one of the earliest copies of the game you could get. It still sports the original “hangtab” on the back of the box which, as the name would suggest, could be flipped up so the box could be hung on pegs.
Another prolific nerd that hangs around on the NintendoAge forums reckons there’s probably only a dozen like it in the world, noting that this particular copy is likely in the best condition.
The game was sold by a retro dealer in Pennsylvania, USA called DKOldies, starting the bidding at a mere one cent. Company CEO, Drew Steimel, said it had been sitting around his office for yonks, along with a bunch of other mint-condition NES games.
The ancient Nintendo game Stadium Events also recently sold for a fuckload of money, fetching its owner a whopping $55K.
The bad news is your barely functional copy of Super Mario Bros. without the box is worth barely anything. Let’s not forget that this was one of the most popular video games of all time, guys.
A loose copy of it will get you around $13 ($10 US) or $19 ($15 US). Lmao.
