5 Video Game Proposals That Turned Out Better Than Old Mate’s In ‘Spider-Man’

A poor bloke recently had his marriage proposal programmed into the new Spider-Man game, only to have her dump him a few weeks before it was released. The story has brought the topic of video game proposals into the limelight because believe it or not, this is far from the first time someone has used a game to pop the question.

In fact, folks have been doing it for years, and for the most part, they tend to turn out much better than poor old Tyler Schultz‘s. Here’s 5 that worked out for the better.

Portal featuring smartass GLaDOS

If you’ve played either of the Portal games, you’ll know the all-seeing AI known as GLaDOS has a real dry sense of humour, which doesn’t make her sound like an ideal voice for a proposal, but as it turns out, she totally is.

Gary Hudston enlisted the help of Portal 2‘s mapping community and Valve‘s own Eric Wolpaw to help him create a custom map. He was even able to get GLaDOS voice actor, Ellen McClain, to record lines for it, which are actually hilarious. Luckily, it was worth the effort, because Gary’s girlfriend, Stephanie, said yes. You can check out the map below.

Borderlands

With the help of Borderlands creator, Gearbox Software, a bloke named Ben was able to propose to his girlfriend, Tora, via the game’s hilarious mascot, Claptrap. Because Claptrap is a little shit, he also has a go at cracking onto old mate’s missus himself in true Borderlands style. It’s bloody wonderful.

It doesn’t say it in the clip below, but Tora definitely says yes, because there’s a second video floating around of the actual proposal.

This guy just straight-up built his own

But hey, if you’re not into reaching out to your favourite game developer for some help, you could always just make your own game like this bloke did for his girlfriend, Lauren. Sure, it’s a little rough around the edges, but not all of us are proper developers, champ.

As you can see, Lauren was pretty stoked on the whole thing. Kudos to the Washed Out track that plays on the water level, too. Great tune.

Minecraft

As far as creating a proposal inside a video game goes, Minecraft is probably the easiest one for that, given it’s essentially an infinite box of digital lego that allows you to create almost anything you want.

This guy, who we’ll simply call mcnerdburger – because that’s what his YouTube channel is called – built his girlfriend, Heather, a castle with messages spread out over a pretty big ascent. At the top, there’s a view of the world in which old mate etched “marry me?” and filled it with lava. Nice. Chicks dig lava.

Suss it out below.

Chrono Trigger, but hacked

Phil was keen on proposing to his girlfriend at Mount Baker in Washington, which was where the pair went on their first date. The problem here was that Phil thought it was probably a bit too obvious and she’d see it coming, so instead, he hacked a copy of a game called Chrono Trigger which she was playing at the time. Genius.

“Sadly, there was no discreet way to get her out there. So I turned to the next best thing, digitally recreating the mountain,” he said in the video description on YouTube.

He added a new area to the game with his skills and filled it with memories they shared over the years. Of course, she said yes. See it for yourself below.

There you have it, folks. If you’ve got a nerdy partner you’re planning on popping the question to, getting it done via a video game is definitely an option. You just gotta hope you don’t turn out like poor old Tyler Schultz.
