With Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, And Vile being positioned to take a solid run at next year’s awards season, it’s likely we won’t be getting our eyes on it until much later in the calendar. But that certainly isn’t going to stop the wheel of intrigue from turning over unabated. And to that end, Zac Efron has given a little bit of insight into just how someone manages to prepare themselves to… y’know… portray modern history’s most unfathomably depraved serial killer. Efron, as you’re all aware by now, plays Ted Bundy in the upcoming biopic. And getting yourself into the headspace to play a horrific monster would be difficult enough by itself, let alone the physical demands such a role requires.
The film premiered at the recent Sundance Film Festival and, while reviews have been mostly middling, the praise for Efron’s performance has been almost universal.
In a sit-down interview with Variety, Efron detailed how he got his body and mind around the role.
On the physical side of things, Efron quipped “Guys in the 70s had that wiry, kinda thin look. Ted was always a little bit gaunt. He always looked pretty tired. [So] I just ate all plant-based and did a lot of cardio.”
Efron also remarked that a set of false teeth made him realise he had slightly more in common with Bundy than he may have liked.
I had a good set of fake teeth that were pretty easy to talk with after a while. A whole bottom row. Our top teeth were very similar. I had a lot of similarities with Ted that were a little bit unnerving.
Efron also dove into just how and why a seemingly normal, sane person comes to the point of agreeing to play Ted Bundy in a full-length feature film.
