A Doco About Legendary Artist Yayoi Kusama Is Hitting Cinemas Boxing Day

Yayoi Kusama

If one of your resolutions for the new year is to become more cultured and expose yourself to more ART, then you may be able to get cracking on that one a little early, as a documentary on legendary Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama will be hitting select Aussie cinemas on Boxing Day.

Kusama: Infinity, produced over a period of ten years by filmmaker Heather Lenz, tells the story of the 89-year-old, who is the top-selling woman artist in the world, and who is arguably best known for her infinity room installation works and bright, bold polka dot motifs.

Kusama moved from Japan to America in the late 1950s, gaining notoriety in the pop art movement thanks her avant garde artworks and performances. She eventually returned to Japan disheartened, as many other artists had adopted her ideas but failed to acknowledge her influence.

The story, however, does not end there. Per the official plot description:

Kusama: Infinity explores the fierce determination of Yayoi Kusama to become a world-renowned artist. Her critical and commercial success comes after decades of struggle against a traumatic upbringing, lifelong mental illness, a conservative Japanese art world, and racism and sexism in the West.

The movie, which screened earlier this year at the Melbourne International Film Festival, will be showing in select cinemas from December 26. You can catch it at:

  • Dendy Newtown, Sydney
  • Dendy Canberra, ACT
  • Cinema Nova, Melbourne
  • Newfarm Cinema, Brisbane
  • State Cinema, Hobart
  • Luna Leederville, Perth
