HOLY SHIT: HBO’s New ‘Watchmen’ Trailer Teases The Return Of Dr. Manhattan

Watchmen

It’s here. HBO has dropped the full-length trailer for its new series Watchmen, the highly-anticipated adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon‘s comic book. Like 99 per cent of everything else I’ve written about this weekend, the trailer was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con 2019.

At its wheel is Damon Lindelof, the man behind a slew of titles including Lost, Prometheus, World War Z, Star Trek into Darkness, and The Leftovers. By the looks of it, the series appears to be a slick mix of nostalgia and new material… and Dr. Manhattan’s damn hand. Regina King fronts the cast which includes Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Hong Chau to name a handful.

At one point, Gossett Jr. claims to be Dr. Manhattan to which King replies: “He lives on fucking Mars.” AND THEN…

HBO’s Watchmen will hit screens this October.

When the series was first announced, Lindelof posted an amusing open letter to fans on Instagram which kicked off with: “I am the unscrupulous bastard currently defiling something that you love.” Not really, but you get it.

“We have no desire to ‘adapt’ the twelve issues Mr. Moore and Mr. Gibbons created thirty years ago,” he wrote. “Those issues are sacred ground and they will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted.”

As Lindelof put it, the series will be a sort of “New Testament.”

When the New Testament came along it did not erase what came before it. Creation. The Garden of Eden. Abraham and Isaac. The Flood. It all happened. And so it will be with Watchmen. The Comedian died. Dan and Laurie fell in love. Ozymandias saved the world and Dr. Manhattan left it just after blowing Rorschach to pieces in the bitter cold of Antarctica.

He added that fans can expect some new characters, new faces, and new masks to cover them.

You can read his long letter, almost as long as the 2009 film, below.
