Viola Davis married to Liam Neeson, whose character is a bad egg which makes Davis and three other women do some highly questionable things? Sign. Me. Up.
So here’s the gist:
Widows, predominantly led by Davis’ character Veronica, welcomes us into the lives of four women with seemingly normal lives. They have absolutely nothing in common until all their husbands die in a heist gone wrong, leaving behind a debt that must be paid. With not much choice, the widows take it upon themselves to finish off the heist, putting their lives at stake but if successful, a future free from darkness awaits.
The film is directed by Steve McQueen, the man behind 12 Years a Slave, Shame, and Hunger. You’ll remember that very first one from when it cleaned up at the 2014 Academy Awards – nine nominations and three main award wins being Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Writing Adapted Screenplay.
So already, this film is in good hands.
But that’s not all because Gillian Flynn co-wrote the screenplay with McQueen, based on the 1983 series of the same name. Flynn is the woman who wrote bloody Gone Girl so expect heart palpitations and a ton of twists.
Oh, and then there’s the cast.
The widows are played by Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, and Cynthia Erivo. And then we have the husbands played by Liam Neeson, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Jon Bernthal (hello Punisher), and Garret Dillahunt. AND THEN, there’s Colin Farrell, Daniel Kaluuya, our very own beautiful Jacki Weaver, Brian Tyree Henry, and Robert Duvall. That’s not even the full cast but you get the point.
