HBO unleashed the trailer overnight and based on the comments, people are already comparing it to the incredible cinematography and aesthetics of season one.

Season three, created by OG showrunner Nic Pizzolatto, follows Detective Wayne Hays (Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali) and his partner Detective Roland West (Stephen Dorff) as they investigate the disappearance of two young children in 1980. But, being True Detective this is not your average mystery/crime series – expect a shit-ton of psychological twists and turns that will most likely make your mind melt.

The official synopsis describes the investigation as a “a grisly crime involving two missing children in the heart of the Ozarks” so start emotionally preparing yourselves now.

Interestingly, season three appears to be split into at least three different time periods. You first have the initial investigation followed by an inquiry into the case by a third party and finally an interview with Hayes about the case, years later, when the detective is trying to recount the investigation.

Carmen Ejogo (Selma, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them) stars as Amelia Reardon, a schoolteacher in Arkansas with a connection to the missing children.

Sarah Gadon (Alias Grace, Dracula Untold) co-stars as well.

True Detective season three will return to HBO January 13, 2019.
