Okay, Sopranos fans, it’s time to get extremely hype: for the first time in months, we have an update on the long-awaited movie prequel to the series, and it’s a doozy.
According to Deadline, the New Line feature will be titled ‘The Many Saints of Newark‘. It’s being co-produced and co-writter by Sopranos series creator David Chase and Lawrence Konner.
We also have a release date: September 25, 2020 – only a year and a half, which seems like ages now, but considering it’s been a full 20 years since The Sopranos first hit HBO, I think we can deal with it.
Perhaps more excitingly, we now know who is going to be starring in the film: Alesandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga, Ray Liotta, John Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, John Magaro, and, as we already knew, Michael Gandolfini.
That’s correct: the late, great James Gandolfini’s son will be playing a young Tony Soprano. It’s perfect and I love it and I shall cry.
While filmmakers are keeping most of the production details under wraps, we do know that the film will be set during the era of the Newark race riots in the 1960s, the heyday of the American mafia (think snappy suits rather than tracksuits, for example). Alesandro Nivola will play a young Dickie Moltisanti, a character who never appeared on screen in the original series – he was Christopher Moltisanti‘s late dad.
Here’s hoping the prequel does the incredible series justice. Not long to wait, folks. Not long at all.
