It’s been a long and harrowing saga, this one of the elusive and supremely rare Szechuan sauce circa 1998 that Rick & Morty brought roaring back into the public conscience for seemingly little other reason than they felt like it.

The first episode the show’s on-going third season dropped the Mulan nugget dipping sauce that McDonald’s produced as a limited time only promotion in the late nineties, with Rick droolingly exclaiming that it was his “series arc.”

Despite promises of pursuing the sauce for nine more seasons, the Golden Arches found a way to reach through the space-time continuum and rescue a small handful of bottles of the good stuff from the grips of the past, gifting them to only a select few.

For the rest of us, it was a matter of endless home experimentation in order to get our hands on the good gear. Many tried, a few got close, but no one managed to *quite* nail it exactly.

Thankfully, those who did wind up with bottles of the actual sauce have been generous to some more prominent internet types, and a small sample of the actual sauce landed in the hands of YouTuber/very soothing voice man Binging With Babish. Not only that, but he managed to get hold of a “spy” copy of the sauce’s ingredients list.

What’s surprising to note is that the official sauce contains, would you believe, Vegemite. Actual, no fooling Vegemite.

Sure, the recipe calls for “yeast extract” and in his recreation video Binging With Babish uses the clearly inferior Marmite, but the point remains valid: If you wanna make this stuff at home, you’ll be chucking in a dollop of Vegemite. Un. Bloody. Real.

So there you have it, folks. The saga has come to an end, the case has been cracked, Ronald’s secrets are out in the open for all to see.

The only thing left to do now? Get in the kitchen and whip yourself up some of that goddamned Mulan McNugget sauce.
