The Age reports the recently-revamped AFL programme has ceased production because of flagging audiences, 25 years and 735 episodes after it first went to air.

“I want to thank the current hosts, Anthony Lehmann, Neroli Meadows, Dylan Alcott, Brendan Fevola and Shane Crawford, the network’s Melbourne managing director Matt Scriven said in a statement.

He also thanked the crew behind the long-running series, as well as the constellation of former The Footy Show hosts.

On Twitter, Lehmann said he was “bloody disappointed” about the decision.

Taking to Instagram, Meadows expressed her gratitude to the behind-the-scenes crew who made the show possible.

“Proud of the show we created this year and proud of the people who worked on it. Fun episode to go out on!” she said.

The show, which aired seven episodes after its most recent revamp, garnered 53,000 viewers across Melbourne over the last week.

That number marks a drastic decrease from the show’s heyday, when hosts including Eddie McGuire and the consistently cooked Sam Newman would garner Melbourne audience numbers well above 480,000.

Channel Nine’s Sunday Footy Show will continue production.
