‘The Accountant’ Was Weirdly Enough The Most Rented Movie Of 2017

I mean, it’s not like it’s upsetting, or massively surprising, but it is… a little odd? Turns out the reasonably-decent-to-good Ben Affleck action flick The Accountant was the most rented movie in the US for all of 2017.

The Motion Picture Association of America — which represents Hollywood‘s major studios — has begun to report home entertainment sales and rentals alongside their cinema stats, which is obviously well overdue considering not only how much streaming content is consumed by the average person, but also the fact that so many big releases are going straight to home entertainment these days.

Their big finding? Yep, The Accountant beat out Moana and Wonder Woman to take out the rental crown, which is pretty staggering considering how massive those movies were in cinemas.

Unsurprisingly, the report – as outlined by The Hollywood Reporter – indicates an increase in digital sales and rentals year-over-year, even as DVD and Blu-ray sales continue on an unmistakeable downwards trend. Digital spending saw a 20 percent increase on 2016, and I can only imagine all of those dollars were spent on The Accountant.

It also proves a universal maxim: despite the fact there has never been a better time for movie releases, with the past 12 or so months being some of the best in memory, people will still spend their money on a decent action flick where Ben Affleck plays an accountant who shoots people.
