Director Taika Waititi hit a career high-point this year with the success of Thor: Ragnarok, but he hasn’t forgotten about his roots – in fact, we are positively delighted to report that as we speak, he is planning a sequel to his beloved 2014 horror-comedy What We Do In The Shadows.
That film told the story of a group of vampires living together in a share house in suburban Wellington, New Zealand, but the sequel will take a slightly different direction, focusing on the werewolf pack from the original.
The director confirmed plans to work on the film in a recent UK interview, saying: “The movie is called We’re Wolves. We are wolves. We’re wolves. It’s a wordplay. Geddit?” Yes, we see what you did there, and we’re totally on-board.
Jermaine Clement is on board to co-direct the film, although this could present a slight problem, as Taika Waititi admitted that the two of them are pretty bad when it comes to working towards a deadline. He told the interviewer:
“You’re not going to see it [the new film] for seven years. We’re notoriously terrible at writing together, Jemaine and I. It usually takes place over e-mails, so we’ll e-mail each other one line of dialogue, once a month… What We Do in the Shadows took six years to write.”
There’s no word yet on whether Rhys Darby will reprise his role as the leader of the werewolves (“not swear wolves”) but we’re hoping that the movie gods will smile on us and make that happen.
In a recent interview with GQ, Taika Waititi said that he took on the massive Marvel blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok to challenge himself and see if he could direct a film on that scale. He told the publication:
“The reason I took the job in the first place was that I can always go back to my much-smaller-scale films and my passion things. I was curious to see if I could make a studio film a passion project.”
