Up until yesterday, interest in the much-hyped Star Wars spinoff series for Disney‘s upcoming streaming service was tepid at best. 24 hours later, thanks to a few key announcements, it’s once again through the roof. Because not only do we know the show is called The Mandalorian and will focus on some sort of roguish intergalactic badass from the same race of beings as Boba Fett, but today we learned the incredibly good news that Taika Waititi is among the list of people who have been tapped to direct.

The Jon Favreau-produced eight-episode series officially rolled cameras on production today, with Star Wars social accounts rolling out the first look at a familiar face for the series.

Better still, though, was the revelation that the series has tapped a who’s-who of good-ass names to serve as directors on the series, one of whom is the handsome bastard from across the ditch, Taika Waititi.
Waititi will be bringing his eccentric brand of wonderment to one of the episodes, while others like Bryce Dallas Howard (!!!), Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), and Dave Filoni (The Clone Wars) will fill out the directorial chair for the rest of the series.
Timeline-wise, the series is set after the fall of the Galactic Empire, but before the rise of the First Order. It will centre on a “lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.”
So, yeah. Yesterday morning? Meh. Now? Hook it to our goddamned veins.
The Mandalorian is due for release at some point in 2019, following the launch of Disney’s streaming service.
