Subtitles On The ‘Last Jedi’ Trailer Might Have Given Away Some Big Info

The full Last Jedi trailer hit the internet the week before last, and it really just gave us more questions than answers. Fans were pretty sure the entire thing was an exercise in misdirection – splicing unrelated conversations and shots together to imply things that may not be true in the finished product. Cheeky!

One of the big mysteries about the trailer is who exactly Snoke is talking to when he is shown in the trailer.  “When I found you I saw raw, untamed power,” he says. “And beyond that, something truly special.” Later in the trailer, he says “Fulfill your destiny.”

A little bit of editing sleight-of-hand makes it impossible to work out who Snoke is saying these things to. The general implication of the comments is that he’s talking to Kylo Ren – who is his apprentice, after all, who he “found”.

Well, one little tidbit might have leaked via the Taiwanese subtitles on the trailer. Reddit user SleepingAran dropped some true knowledge in a comment:

I’ve noticed the moment when Snoke says “When I found you”, the subtitle uses the feminine “you” which is “妳” as oppose to the gender-neutral “you” which is “你”. The former is the combination the word “女”, which means female and “尔” which means you; while the latter is gender neutral that can be used to indicates female and male, but mainly used for male.

This means that when Snoke says “When I found you”, Snoke is talking to a female character, which in my opinion is most likely Rey at this point.

Pretty compelling. But it does assume that whatever company or department they contracted to do the subtitling was given this full information and didn’t just assume. Or perhaps for languages with heavily gendered pronouns they deliberately shook it up to add another layer of deflection.

Look, here’s the trailer again if you want to make up your own damn mind:
