Stefán Karl Stefánsson, AKA Robbie Rotten From ‘Lazy Town’, Has Died Age 43

Stefán Karl Stefánsson, the actor behind beloved Lazy Town villain Robbie Rotten, has died of bile duct cancer. He was 43.

Stefánsson’s wife Steinunn Olina Thorsteinsdottir issued a short statement this morning confirming the news.

“Stefan’s family wants to express their gratitude for the support and warmth received in recent years, and to express their deepest sympathy to the many friends and fans of Stefan Karl,” she said.

Stefánsson is perhaps best known for his work as the mischievously evil Robbie Rotten on Lazy Town, the children’s show which aired between 2004 and 2007, and again between 2013 and 2014.

He was diagnosed with bile duct cancer in 2016, and the outlook for his recovery was positive after surgery. It was around that time the Lazy Town tune We Are Number One became a viral hit, with fans flocking to the jaunty song in support of the actor.

Fan support translated to a GoFundMe campaign, with supporters eventually donating nearly USD $170,000 to help with his medical costs.

Sadly, his cancer returned in 2018. Doctors deemed it inoperable.

Stefánsson is survived by his wife and four children, and will be remembered by many more for his vibrant on-screen personality.
