A ‘Solo’ Screenwriter Responds To Chatter Around Lando’s Sexuality

One of the enduring mysteries of the Star Wars universe is that though the fictional galaxy far, far away contains trillions of weird and wonderful lifeforms, literally zero of them depicted so far have been openly LGBTQ. Considering there are now approximately one million Star Wars films in production, at some point there probably has to be ONE gay person or it’s going to be weird.

Well, we might have had one all along. Solo: A Star Wars Story writer Lawrence Kasdan has confirmed in an interview that the writers consider Lando Calrissian to be sexually fluid – and there are definitely subtle moments in the new film which play to that

Jonathan Kasdan – who wrote the film with his father Lawrence agreed with The Huffington Post when asked if he thought Lando was pansexual.

I would say yes. There’s a fluidity to Donald and Billy Dee’s [portrayal of Lando’s] sexuality. I mean, I would have loved to have gotten a more explicitly LGBT character into this movie. I think it’s time, certainly, for that, and I love the fluidity ― sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and that droids are a part of.

He doesn’t make any hard and fast rules. I think it’s fun. I don’t know where it will go.

His father was more guarded, saying “maybe it means something, maybe it doesn’t.”

But it’s good to know that the creators behind Star Wars are contending with this. Maybe one day they’ll, you know, actually put it in a movie.
