Sandra Oh Becomes First Asian Woman To Cop An Emmy Nom In Her Category

Sandra Oh – woman of so many bloody television shows and films has finally been nominated for an Emmy Award making her the first Asian female actresss to cop a nomination for a lead in a drama series.

GUPTA, Gupta is queen.

Oh has been nominated for her outstanding performance in the highly addictive and critically acclaimed BBC America series Killing Eve. In short, Oh plays a bored desk-bound MI5 agent by the name of Eve Polastri. After a Russian politician is murdered, Eve is given the task of protecting the only witness to the crime but she finds herself fighting tooth and nail when she comes up against a badass assassin, Villanelle (Jodie Comer).

Killing Eve creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge also copped a nomination for writing the BBC series.

There are only eight episodes so if you haven’t gotten around the series yet, it’s one you can easily knock out during the weekend.

Oh is most known for her beloved role as Dr Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy a role she’s held for TEN years, and Vice Principal Gupta in childhood fave Princess Diaries. She’s also got Under The Tuscan Sun, Sideways, Big Happiness, and Big Fat Liar on the CV.

Chatting to the New York Times about the nom Oh said:

“I’m happy to get that ball rolling, because what I hope happens is that next year and the next year and the next year, we will have presence. And the presence will grow not only to Asian-Americans, you know, from yellow to brown, but to all our other sisters and brothers. Our First Nations sisters and brothers. Our sisters and brothers of different sizes and different shapes. If I can be a part of that change, like [expletive], yeah, let’s celebrate it.”

I’m going to take a wild guess and say the “expletive” means a good ol’ fuck yeah”.

Naturally, Twitter’s so damn happy for her:

A Wrinkle in Time director Ava DuVernay congratulated the actress writing “Congrats to Sandra Oh. And saluting all the Asian actresses overlooked for decades.”

Co-star Comer tweeted:

Oh herself posted this adorable picture to her Twitter earlier today with her sister and I’m emotional as hell:

In other exciting Emmy news, human sunshine and pure soul Jonathan Van Ness has been nominated for two Emmy awards. Queer Eye was nominated in the Structured Reality Program while his Funny or Die webseries Gay Of Thrones was nominated in the Outstanding Short Form Variety Series.

As you can imagine, Van Ness was absolutely overcome by all the emotions:
