Your Boy Ryan Reynolds Is Using Deadpool To Mock The Disney-Fox Acquisition

It was announced this week that corporate behemoth Disney plans to acquire the entertainment assets of 21st Century Fox for a cool $52.4 billion, and Deadpool has some thoughts on that, or at least your boy Ryan Reynolds does.

Overnight, the actor tweeted an image of his character being led out of Disneyland by a security guard, captioned: “Apparently you can’t actually blow the Matterhorn.”

It was the second time he’d addressed the proposed merger, after tweeting a few days ago that it might be “time to uncork that explosive sexual tension between Deadpool and Mickey Mouse.” We’ll just give you some time to process that mental image.

The Deadpool films are very close to Ryan Reynolds’ heart – the actor has found arguably the greatest success of his career playing Wade Wilson, and he is heavily involved in their production and promotion, meaning he may well be nervous about the implications of the Disney deal.

Though the acquisition will put the character in the mouse’s control, presumably bringing him into the existing Marvel cinematic universe, the studio seems smart enough to know that they should not kill a potential cash cow by sanitising him in line with other Disney products.

Speaking to investors about the future of the films, chairman Bob Iger suggested that the graphic violence and colourful language that draw fans to Deadpool could actually become a distinct part of the broader Marvel cinematic universe .

He later clarified, via The Hollywood Reporter, that the studio is happy with the idea of R-ratee productions, saying:

“[Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool. As long as we let the audiences know what’s coming, we think we can manage that fine.”

So there you have it – while it’s purely speculative at this point, the deal could actually open the door for more foul-mouthed, violent Marvel and Disney films in years to come. Deadpool might even get his own world in Kingdom Hearts or something like that. Interesting times, folks.
