Ryan Reynolds Reveals Brad Pitt Did ‘Deadpool 2’ For A Starbucks Coffee

Following the mass fanfare over the first Deadpool film a few years back, Marvel lovers were left wondering if they’d be able to follow it up with the 2018 sequel.

What we were presented with was a hilariously well-written masterpiece filled with fan-bloody-tastic one-liners, primo action scenes and some sick cameos including Brad fkn Pitt.

Here, the man behind the mask Ryan Reynolds gives Pedestrian.TV the lowdown on Brad’s cameo as well as the freshly released supercut, including 15 minutes of epic footage that you haven’t seen yet.

Is the extended cut of the film tougher and edgier?
It’s mental. There’s an expression, ‘bend it, don’t break it’. Well, the extreme cut is breaking a lot of things.

When you started thinking about the sequel, in what ways did you want to make it bigger than the first film?

We wanted to expand the universe, but we didn’t want to lose all of that down-and-dirty feel that made Deadpool 1 so important and special. Really it was about taking a lot of the tenets that people loved about Deadpool 1 and giving them a summer version of Deadpool where the scale is slightly larger. Our budgets are never what the other superhero budgets are, but I think that that works in our favour. Necessity is the mother of invention and you have to rely a lot more on character rather than spectacle. I think that in terms of Deadpool, that’s always been number one on the chalkboard of our priorities, character over spectacle. The character has to be bigger than the action in the movie and that is something that is really important to us and we really wanted that for Deadpool 2.

When you have a guy like David Leitch directing, who has a triple black belt in action, you can’t help but fall in love with the marriage of these two ideas. He really infused Deadpool 2 with spectacle and big action, but also tons of character. We usurp a lot of the expectations that people have about these big action sequences because Deadpool has that direct line to the audience and he gets to talk to the audience and he gets to address them through the camera. The audience feels like they’re swept up and taken along for this ride and at the same time they’re right there with Deadpool.

Would you say that there’s a strong theme of family in the film?

Deadpool 2 is a family film. At the end of the day, we were looking at how we could make an R rated Pixar film. That’s what Deadpool 2 was meant to be and that’s something we love about it. The first film was a love story and the second movie is a family film masquerading as a comic book movie, so it is about family. It’s about this idea of whether one act of kindness can change the whole world. You have this character Deadpool who isn’t representative of the virtuous, perfect male. He’s a guy who is totally flawed, totally dysfunctional, he’s a complete idiot and he just wants to be slightly better. That to me is much more interesting than a guy who starts the movie as perfect or infallible in some way, so it’s a lot of fun to play this guy.

Something that is connected with this idea of family is The X-Force. How did you get Brad Pitt involved?

That is the power of a letter. It’s the same way we got Celine Dion involved and the same way that we got Matt Damon involved. They are these tiny cameos that are funny. They are blink and you’ll miss it things. I got Brad involved when I sent him a letter. I’d met him a couple of times and I just thought it was funny that the biggest movie star on the planet would be playing a character who is literally invisible and mute. He doesn’t say a word in the movie and he plays a character that’s invisible. It’s only when that character dies and we see him for a nanosecond, that we see that it’s Brad Pitt. The joke is that it’s just the biggest waste on planet earth of a movie star. Brad thought that was hilarious and we thought it was hilarious. He gave us 8 minutes to come over to the lot at Fox and we did this super-secret shoot. He did his one shot and left. All he asked for was a Starbucks coffee. I asked him if he meant the franchise or just one individual coffee. Thankfully it was the latter so I gave him the coffee, he drank it and he left and everybody screamed and threw confetti in the air. We couldn’t believe our luck. It was one of those pinch me moments that you have on a movie set when a guy who is that big of a legend comes in and does it just for the love of the game. It’s a good feeling.

What will audiences enjoy about watching the film at home?

I like variety and options. I like seeing outtakes and I like seeing behind-the-scenes footage, especially with movies that you get obsessed with. A lot of people get obsessed with Deadpool and they get to immerse themselves in the entire world and the entire filmmaking process. That’s always fun for me. Whenever I get the home entertainment packages I always go straight to the bloopers because it shows a split second of how much fun everyone is having on set and I always like to see that. It breaks down that whole barrier. People’s home systems these days are so elaborate and crazy that it’s a pretty amazing cinematic experience.

Deadpool 2 is full of a ton of Easter eggs. People who see the movie always say that they’ve got to go back because they missed a ton of jokes because they happen fast and furious or they’re just thrown away at the weirdest moment. I always love it when you miss a joke because you’re laughing through the next joke. Deadpool 2 is definitely a movie that you want to revisit over and over again, because you’re going to find different things and little Easter eggs throughout the film.
