One of the many benefits of not being famous is the fact our most embarrassing memories are mostly replayed to an audience of one. It’s usually in the quiet moments when our minds are allowed to roam. There’s a flash of adrenaline; maybe a catch in the throat. Either way, your nervous system rips you back to a crisis in the past, unable to differentiate that sliver of experience from your present reality.
Our private cinemas of pain have odd session times. Fortunately, the screenings are usually short. What we’re getting at is most of us are extremely fortunate to not have our cruellest embarrassments caught on camera and displayed for everyone else to replay.

Not so for Rami Malek, whose appearance on stage at this week’s Golden Globes ceremony featured an awkward interaction – or lack thereof – with Nicole Kidman. On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the eponymous host saw it fit to wrench Best Actor-winning Malek back down to everyone else’s level by sharing the moment he was effectively ignored by the Australian gun.
And then Kimmel twisted the knife, asking him how it all went wrong.
