For a special Welcome to Country episode for NAIDOC Week, the crew at Play School will welcome a new friend to the show, an Indigenous doll named Kiya.

Held annually across the country in July, NAIDOC week celebrates the many achievements, rich culture and history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Absolute legend and Play School presenter Miranda Tapsell shared a picture with her new mate on Instagram. The star of Aussie romcom Top End Wedding will spend the episode getting to know Kiya.
“How moorditj (good) is Kiya? She’s one of our new Playschool friends all the way from Nyoongar country in Perth,” Tapsell said on Instagram.
Kiya also means hello in Nyoongar language, she added.
“I can’t wait for you all to meet her in a couple of weeks for our very special Welcome to Country episode for NAIDOC week with the wonderful Luke Carroll and Hunter Page-Lochard.”
Per ABC Indigenous, Kiya’s dress was designed by Noongar artist Kiya Watt and is symbolic of her people and the Mother Ocean.
The episode, celebrating Indigenous language and culture, will air 9:00am Monday, 8 July on ABC Me.
Tapsell’s film, Top End Wedding, came out last month but you can still catch it in select cinemas across the country. In it, Tapsell stars as recently engaged Lauren who only has ten days to track down her mother somewhere in the Northern Territory, reunite her parents, and pull off her dream – you guessed it – Top End Wedding. Bohemian Rhapsody‘s Gwilym Lee stars as Ned, Lauren’s fiancé.
Wayne Blair (The Sapphires, Cleverman) directed the flick.
