The 2018 awards season is a bizarre time, given the sheer number of big Hollywood players who have tumbled from their positions of power this past year. How the hell do you host an awards show and still be funny while dealing with the massive elephant in the room? If you’re Nick Kroll and John Mulaney, you just go right in, and viciously roast the hell out of everybody.
The two comedians presided over the Film Independent Spirit Awards this weekend, and in a hilarious and highly cathartic twelve-minute monologue, the just simply went for the throat, laying into Harvey Weinstein, Louis CK, Kevin Spacey and other fallen Hollywood men. Nick Kroll took a particular swipe at director Brett Ratner, saying:
“Those who have had the pleasure of meeting Ratner know he is constantly scratching his balls. One day, he was really going to town on his sad sacks, below his Banana Republic boxer briefs. We watched him walk away and walk over to the crafts services table where he touched six different doughnuts and then he grabbed one and walked away. If that’s how the guy treats doughnuts …”
Yikes. The pair also took a few gentler jabs at nominees like Saorise Ronan, Timothee Chalemet and Frances McDormand over the course of their monologue, and you can watch the whole thing below:
