Trekkies Earth-wide have been collectively beaming into their pants today, as brand new CBS/Netflix show Star Trek: Discovery landed on the latter’s streaming platform, showcasing the Star Trek universe 10 years before the events of the OG 1966 series.
The froth is at an all-time high for the first new entry into one of the world’s longest running and most popular sci-fi franchises since 2005, and super, insanely die-hard fans should be frothing the most as Netflix has revealed a hidden (of sorts) easter egg exclusively for you lot.
If you head to Netflix right now and start watching the first two eps that dropped today (eps will be dropping 5pm AEST every Monday), and head on down to the subtitle pop-up bar, you’ll notice something no other Netflix show has ever had on offer.
Fuckin’ Klingon subtitles.
Klingon mastermind Lieven L. Litaer has used his super-brain to transcribe all 15 eps worth of dialogue to sub-titles, which to most people is nuts, but good on him.
Klingon is of course the language spoken in the Trek universe by, well, The Klingons (aka the dudes that look like someone’s taken a big ol’ shit on their foreheads), and is a full-fledged dialect some (again, SUPER HUGE BIG-TIME) fans can literally speak fluently.
Yeh, so, it looks like that.
The amount of people in the world who can understand Klingon to the degree that they can speedily read and comprehend sub-titles must be in the like… tens, I assume, so it may not be the most utilised Netflix feature of all time but it’s pretty dang cool.
