A Location Scout For Netflix’s ‘Narcos’ Has Been Shot And Killed In Mexico

A location scout for the Netflix series Narcos has been shot to death in central Mexico, while in the process of researching for the fourth season of the show.

The body of 37-year-old Carlos Muñoz Portal was found in a bullet-riddled car in a remote area near San Bartolo Actopan, close to the border of the Hidalgo state.

Muñoz was described as a “seasoned” professional, and in addition to his work with Narcos, had credits including SicarioSpectreFast & Furious and Apocalypto.

Netflix released a statement, saying:

“We are aware of the passing of Carlos Muñoz Portal, a well-respected location scout, and send our condolences to his family. The facts surrounding his death are still unknown as authorities continue to investigate.”

He was last seen on Monday, heading out to take some production photographs, and his body was found on a remote dirt road some hours later.

The facts of his death are “still unknown”, and a spokesman for the Attorney General of the State of Mexico said that no witnesses have been located as yet.

The fourth season of the show is said to be exploring the rise of the notorious Juarez cartel in Mexico, as the third focused on Colombia‘s Cali cartel.

June 2017 was Mexico’s deadliest month in at least 20 years, with authorities recording 2,234 murders nationwide. The first half of the year saw an approximate 12,155 homicide investigations.

Muñoz’s death casts doubt on whether the production will remain in Mexico, where it was expected to generate a number of local jobs, or move back to Colombia.
