Disney reimagining Mulan as a live-action film was always going to be risky, considering they already stuck the historical Chinese legend in the minds of an entire generation with their 1998 animated feature.
That being said, the studio just unveiled the first look at their upcoming flick, and… phwoar.
It’s real cool.
That there is the first image of Liu Yifei in the titular role, and she looks like she knows exactly what she’s doing. Peep the pinky technique! Surely deadly.
Yifei has joined a stacked cast on the feature, including Donnie Yen, Gong Li, Jet Li, and relative newcomer Yoson An.
Of course, Yoson An’s involvement caused its own mini-controversy. The young gun will portray Hua Mulan‘s love interest Chen Honghui and not the animated feature’s cartoonishly sexy Shang, which caused concern in some Disney-frothing camps.
We guess we’ll just have to wait for the first image of his character to drop to allay any concerns.
Mulan is expected to hit U.S. screens on March 27, 2020.
