A new “major” Marvel movie is set to be filmed in Sydney later this year but, since it’s still early days, Disney has not revealed the title. All we’ve got is “Untitled Marvel Studios Feature Film.”

Over the weekend, Variety reported the movie will be shot at Fox Studios Australia which recently came under Disney’s ownership after the massive Disney-Fox merger. The Australian government is set to provide a $24 million subsidy to Disney to film the movie.

Though we might not know the film’s name, it is being teased as a “a big-budget superhero film.”

A couple of years back, Thor: Ragnarok was shot in Queensland so this wouldn’t be Marvel’s first project in Australia.

Marvel Studios vice president David Grant said they were “thrilled to be returning to Australia to work with the talented and highly skilled Australian crew, stunt performers and actors, together with the thousands of small businesses across Australia that supply world class equipment, goods, facilities and services to large budget productions”.

In a statement, Minister for Communications and the Arts Mitch Fifield said: “We are very excited to have Marvel return to Australia following the incredible success of Thor: Ragnarok.”

As far as rumours go, some publications – including The Sydney Morning Herald – are tipping Shang-Chi as the chosen flick.

The movie will feature Marvel‘s first-ever Asian lead. It introduces us to Shang-Chi, otherwise known as Master of Kung Fu – the son of shadowy figure, Fu Manchu. After learning of his father’s criminal life and evil schemes, Shang-Chi becomes determined to take down his ol’ man’s organisation.

Shang-Chi will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12, The Glass Castle, The Shack) and screenwriter David Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984) will pen the script. According to The Hollywood ReporterMarvel is bringing together a mostly Asian-American and Asian cast.
